“The 2021 Sundance Film Festival will be a grand partnership of communities. The 2021 Festival will extend beyond Utah and will be co-created by and for different communities in different locations, preserving what is magical about experiencing films on the big screen with others.”
– Tabitha Jackson, Director, Sundance Film Festival

We’re thrilled to announce that FilmNorth will participate in a bold and unprecedented experiment with the Sundance Film Festival. FilmNorth is one of 30 US partners that will work together to amplify independent, artistic voices during the 2021 Festival (January 28-February 3). In addition FilmNorth presents four conversations that will be available to a global audience during the festival (January 28 – February 3) that will premiere as a part of Sundance’s “Beyond Film” platform.

As an Official Partner, FilmNorth will serve as a regional satellite to make Sundance films accessible via socially distanced and safe experiences at the Riverview Theater, only if state protocols allow. In addition, our annual FilmNorth Forum will present original virtual panels and conversations that will be shared with the world on our website and the Sundance Film Festival’s global platform. Our FilmNorth Forum is made possible by the NEA, Warner Media, Minnesota State Arts Board, and the John S. And James L. Knight Foundation.

This groundbreaking initiative is the latest FilmNorth/Sundance collaboration. “FilmNorth has long had a very special relationship with the Sundance Institute, presenting labs, workshops, screenings, and conversations in the Twin Cities,” said FilmNorth Executive Director Andrew Peterson. “We’re thrilled and honored to now be selected as their exclusive Minnesota partner for this once-in-a-lifetime event.” For the full 2021 Sundance Film Festival satellite screens announcement click here.

CAPACITY & SAFETY

In consultation with the City of Minneapolis, State of Minnesota, Riverview Theater and Sundance Institute, we are limiting seating to 70 for each screening. This is 10% of the seating capacity at the Riverview—and below the current City and State limits (25% capacity with a maximum attendance of 150). To further ensure safety, masks will be required to be worn at all times while inside the Riverview Theater, concessions will not be sold, and outside food will not be allowed. Staff will be on site to ensure that all safety protocols are followed and we reserve the right to require anyone not following these protocols to leave the venue immediately.

We are following NATO CinemaSafe guidelines for all screenings, which can be found here (https://www.cinemasafe.org/#guidelines).

Disclaimer: given the ever-changing situation, screenings could be canceled at any time if deemed unsafe. This decision is solely at the discretion of FilmNorth and the Riverview Theater. In this event, FilmNorth will fully refund any ticket purchases.

Safety Update:
The State of Minnesota currently asks “people who visit Minnesota, and Minnesotans returning after travel out of state, to stay away from others (quarantine) for 14 days after they arrive in Minnesota.” As a result, FilmNorth has recently added this as a requirement for screening attendance. If you find yourself in this situation, we apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment and will, of course, offer a full refund.

As you may know, FilmNorth was already exceeding State safety guidelines by restricting attendance to 10%, requiring mask wearing at all times inside the Riverview Theater, and by not allowing concessions or outside food.

We hope everyone will understand this decision. The health and safety of our community has always been, and will always be, our primary concern.
