Filmmaking with Your Smartphone

Starts March 18

In-person. 1 session: Saturday, March 18, 10:00 am-4:00 pm

FiLMiC Pro continues to be the premier app for video capture on mobile devices. In this workshop you’ll learn how to harness your phone’s potential using the FiLMiC Pro mobile HD video app, shoot and edit footage, and upload it to social media sites. FiLMiC Pro (for iPhone or Android) is the gold standard app for mobile HD video used to shoot Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane, Sean Baker’s award-winning film Tangerine, and Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love” music video.

Students will conduct interviews, capture great sound, and practice shooting steady, sequenced video. After shooting a short film, you’ll learn how to edit your video using iMovie (or a similar app such as Premiere Rush for Android users) and upload your video to various social media sites. Other topics discussed are livestreaming, handheld considerations, and optimizing lighting conditions. Students should bring their iPhone or Android phone (AND CHARGER) with at least 3GB of space available and FiLMiC Pro already installed (click here to download). Note: if you’re not ready to commit to an annual plan, FiLMiC Pro offers a small weekly rate for those who prefer a trial period. iPad users are welcome. There is a short lunch break.

NOTE: this in-person course is held at FilmNorth550 Vandalia Street, Suite 120, Saint Paul, MN 55114. FilmNorth is following CDC’s current COVID-19 variant guidance for Ramsey County:

  • People with any COVID-19 symptoms, a positive test, or exposure to someone with COVID-19 should stay home.

Nick gave us an opportunity to ask questions throughout and was very patient with any issues we had with the tech part. And the assignments during the day were really great and helped me get used to the app. —Winter 2022 student

The organization was really good, with hands-on activities well-placed. —Winter 2022 student
