Framing & Composition
Starts October 13
2 sessions: Saturday-Sunday, October 13-14, 10 am-5 pm
A filmmaker is a visual storyteller. In this course you’ll learn the basics of the visual language of cinema, including the rules of cinematic composition and technical concepts, from aspect ratios to types of shots and camera movements. We’ll look at American and international film, film theory, and conduct practical exercises in framing and composing shots. Through watching examples and practical exercises, we’ll cover conventions of framing (aspect ratios, lenses, depth of focus, rule of thirds/180-degree rule, types of shots, camera movements and angles) and how they achieve the desired affect of their use. Each convention or shot will be accompanied by a movie still for analysis.
This course will benefit aspiring directors, cinematographers, camera operators, and those who wish to pursue a filmmaking career and learn more about storytelling and narrative visual tools. Students will leave being able to approach their projects with a grasp of visual cinematic language. Bring a phone camera and charger for class exercises. There is a lunch break each session.
Tuition: $235 regular/$175 member/$130 low-income
