FilmNorth Academy (ages 14-18)
Starts July 23
2 weeks: M–F, July 23–August 3, 12–4 pm
FilmNorth Academy provides a “film school” experience in this hands-on two-week camp that combines film studies and analysis with film production and post-production. A series of guest artists will offer insight into different aspects of filmmaking as the students work through developing, shooting, and editing their own films over two weeks. FilmNorth Academy is intended for high school age students who have previous experience with filmmaking and are interested in exploring a career in film.
Students are expected to provide in advance of the first camp session a film concept they are interested in producing for an under 5-minute short film (anything from a one-page treatment to a full script). As a prerequisite, David Grant’s screenwriting camp is recommended but not required.
Deacon Warner is the Youth Programs Director at FilmNorth, where he teaches and directs video production through in-school residencies, an after school video production program and youth summer programming. His students’ work has been accepted into many festivals and screenings and won numerous awards. As an independent filmmaker, Deacon has produced and directed a number of short documentaries including the award winning 56, the story of his father’s post-war football fame at the University of Minnesota. He is currently working on Radical Roots, a documentary about the food coop movement in the Twin Cities.
Max Becker is FilmNorth’s Director of Technical & Facilities Operations, a filmmaker, and musician. He—along with fellow Minneapolis College of Art and Design graduates Kevin Russell and Joe Clark—founded Northern Outpost Media, a Minneapolis-based production company that specializes in uniquely organic music videos. The company began in 2008 and produced over 20 episodes of an online web series that focused on the local music scene by showcasing bands and musicians in a live studio environment. A year later, Northern Outpost began producing distinctive music videos that premiered on MTV, The Fuse Network, Pitchfork, Stereogum, and Paste Magazine.
Camp Registration Guidelines & Cancellation Policy
- Registration deadlines are listed with camp descriptions (click on camp title). You may register online, in person at FilmNorth, or by phone with a credit/debit card at 651.644.1912, x2 or x3. Space is assigned on a first-come basis. Registrations must include payment in full to be valid. Completing the online registration form without payment DOES NOT reserve a space in a camp. Registrations are accepted beyond registration deadlines as long as space is available.
- If minimum enrollment has not been reached by 5 days prior to the start date of a camp, FilmNorth may cancel it, in which case registrants will immediately be notified and receive a full refund by PayPal (online registrations, minus PayPal fee) or credit/debit card (phone or in person credit/debit card registrations) within 5 business days. A check will be issued for registrations that were paid in cash. In lieu of a refund, students have the option of applying their tuition to another camp if scheduled in the same calendar year.
- For those wishing to cancel a registration prior to the registration deadline, 100% of the tuition will be refunded minus a $25 administrative fee (plus PayPal fee if applicable). For registration cancellations received after the registration deadline but prior to the first camp session, 50% of the tuition will be refunded minus a $25 administrative fee (plus PayPal fee if applicable). As of a camp start date, no refunds or credits/exchanges will be given.
- Tuition is not prorated for missed camp sessions.
